Gutsy packages for 0.9.9.9-rc0 available -- please help us test

It's been a wild couple of days. I finished up the rc0 release for Windows and Mac OSX on Saturday, spent Sunday upgrading my laptop from Feisty to Gutsy and then on Monday we had some quirky subversion collisions.

We've worked out some/most of the issues with the Ubuntu packaging for Miro and build a package for Gutsy. This package is available in the Miro repositories.

Things to note:

  1. This package is release candidate 0 for version 0.9.9.9. If you are at all squeamish about testing software in a beta state, you should wait for the 0.9.9.9 final release which will be sometime this week or next week.
  2. Back up your ~/.miro directory BEFORE installing and using this package. If there were issues, you want to be able to go back to your previous Miro state.
  3. Miro conflicts with sun-java6-plugin. You can't have both installed at the same time. This is a workaround for problems we're having with the sun-java6-plugin, gtkmozembed, and Miro. If this is a problem for you, you should wait until the 0.9.9.9 final release. It's possible we'll have a different fix for it by then, but it's more likely that this will happen in version 1.0 or later. If you know how to set up gtkmozembed so that it doesn't load plugins, let us know.
Instructions:

If you follow the directions at http://www.getmiro.com/download/ubuntu.php but use:

deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu gutsy/

as the line to add, then you'll pick up the Miro repository for Gutsy.

wooo!! so many new videos since i updated to gutsy. uni productivity has just dropped to zero.

It wants to remove sun-java6-plugin. _That_ is not acceptable for most people. What's going on? How can that package influence miro? and more importantly, could it be fixed by, for example, not reusing the gecko built in the ubuntu repositories? Also, why is it always so messy with ubuntu releases? The package in the ubuntu repository is also broken. Why not, for Hardy, try to get a stable working version, and inform or supply the ubuntu MOTU's with a working package before universe freeze?

Meneer R: In the blog entry, I talk about the problem with the sun-java6-plugin. I didn't work on the issue, so I can't talk about it beyond that. We opened up a new bug for finding a better solution--it's sort of a catch-all for issues between Miro and Sun's java. Please comment there if you have good ideas that are feasible. http://bugzilla.pculture.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9064 If you want to help out with Ubuntu packaging, we'd appreciate it. We could use a dedicated packager. The Gutsy release coincided with us trying to get 0.9.9.9-rc0 out and having various problems in the process of doing so. We're pushing pretty hard for 1.0 and trying to fix a lot of the segfault/Miro startup issues. Also, we had no idea there was a package in the Ubuntu repository. I've talked about that previously as well.

I'm sorry if I was badly informed. The truth is, because the version in the Ubuntu repositories, is not working correctly and seems to be out-of-date, I was looking around for a more up-to-date version. Currently, i compiled my own package, but i'm not an experienced package builder. I will investigate the java issue. Maybe i can help.

Meneer R: I apologize--I didn't mean to castigate you. I just wanted you to know that there's status on those issues elsewhere. 0.9.8 isn't "super old". We released it in July: http://www.getmiro.com/blog/2007/07/whats-new-in-miro-public-preview-1/ We didn't get 0.9.9 out until September: http://www.getmiro.com/blog/2007/09/miro-public-preview-2-099-released/ I think that would have been too late for the universe freeze for Ubuntu. We're doing releases every couple of months in our push to get a solid and stable 1.0 out the door. We've got a lot of enhancements and refactoring scheduled after 1.0 which theoretically will improve the product significantly and alleviate some of the big issues we've got right now. So we definitely missed the mark on getting Gutsy packages out in our repository by a week (and counting). I'll try to be more on the ball for Hardy Heron.

The secondary box I got to toy around with Ubuntu was just upgraded to Gutsy, and I decided to try and get Miro working in it instead of dualbooted XP. I'm using the RC1 .deb file here: http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu/gutsy/ To my knowledge and add/remove menu... I have no java package installed at this time. My old install was crashing the program whenever I clicked a channel while a movie was playing. And my Windows install was annoying me (I guess this was fixed in .9.9) by refusing to delete vids after I clicked delete. Thus far, it's working fine - I've detected only one bug: after using it for quite a while in various screenmodes (fullscreen video on and off), and listening to audio with visualisations (a mystery for me... I never told it to use vis and I don't know what app would be putting them there, and there is no rightclick menu), the app's window borders are gone - it's drawing on the whole screen (over the taskbar), unresizable, and when I alt tab to view the taskbar, there's no 'resize' option.

I just added a conflict with sun-java5-plugin as well (I forget if it made it into the rc1 release or not). To reiterate, the conflicts are there until someone finds a better solution. Anyhow, one of the comments in the LaunchPad bug report suggests using the icedtea plugin and that this plugin doesn't cause the problem. The package is 'icedtea-java7-plugin' and it's part of Java 7 (the OpenJDK). This is available in the Gutsy universe repository. I haven't used it myself. If you try it out, let me know if it works or not over the long term--remember this is an intermittent issue.
